Jeju United’s two-game losing streak came to a screeching halt on Saturday as a goal from Hwang Il-Soo combined with clutch goalkeeping from both Kim Ho-Jun and backup Kim Kyung-Min propelled the Orange to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Ulsan Hyundai Tigers in a battle for fourth place in K-League Classic standings.

Despite back and forth action through the first half, the game’s first goal did not come until the second 45. After Hugo Droguett created a turnover in Ulsan’s half, he calmly dribbled the ball in towards the box, and cut to the center to cross to Hwang Il-Soo, who was waiting at the left side of the box.

Hwang juked around the one defender, cut one stride to the center and unloaded a masterfully aimed shot into the bottom right corner of Ulsan’s goal, outside the reach of their sprawling keeper’s fingertips. The goal gave Jeju a 1-0 lead, and sent the hometown fans into a frenzy.

Hwang’s goal was his third of the season, tying him with teammates Yoon Bit-Garam and Song Jin-Hyung for second in Jeju United goal scoring through 21 games.

On 75 minutes, Jeju keeper Kim Ho-Jun managed to stunt an Ulsan attack that skimmed the goal line and rolled out of bounds, although he injured himself while making the series of saves. An attempted block by Filip Kasalica appeared to be at fault, as the attacker’s boot clashed with Kim’s left arm while the keeper was sprawled on the turf to deny him. Kim was forced to leave the pitch for the remainder of the match, giving way to backup keeper Kim Kyung-Min, who would be forced to backstop Jeju’s one goal lead while playing his first minutes of 2014.

Ulsan was keen to test their opponent’s new keeper, and nearly evened the game in extra time. Ulsan took possession of the ball in the box left of the goal, streaked in and pounded a shot that Kim dove at and was able to steer towards the left post.

Shortly after, Ulsan appeared to have gained the equalizer as the ball was chipped over Jeju’s defenders and headed to an attacker in the middle, who then booted the ball into the goal’s top-right corner. Luckily for Jeju, the headed pass was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed. It was the last threat United would face in the match, as Jeju hung on to their lead for a 1-0 win.

The win padded Jeju’s lead over Ulsan in K-League Classic standings, separating the two teams by four points in fourth and fifth. It also put Jeju within striking distance of third place Suwon Bluewings, who they now trail by only one point.

Jeju United’s next two matches are on the road, as they face ninth place Incheon United on Aug. 24, and seventh place Seoul FC on Aug. 31. The Orange does not return home to Seogwipo World Cup Stadium until next month, when they will face the sixth place Jeonnam Dragons on September 6th.
