From Aug 4 to 8, the 2014 Jeju Hometown Culture Summer Camp was held at the Jeju Human Resources Development Center of Jeju Special Self Governing Province. College students from Korea and abroad with parents born on Jeju took part in the program.

A total of 38 students joined the event, with 30 from within Korea, four from Japan, two from New York and two from California. The camp has been held since 1978 by the province and Jeju National University (JNU) to help the children of Jeju Islanders outside the island learn about Jeju’s history and traditional culture to encourage pride in their parents' homeland.

Jeju governor Won Hee-ryong said at the opening ceremony, “I welcome you to come to the homeland of your parents, your grandfathers and grandmothers. I hope you get to learn about Jeju and join in helping to promote Jeju’s value.”

The students then heard a lecture on Jeju culture on the second day titled “Jeju was the land of stars” and then visited the Exhibit Hall at the Overseas Jeju Islanders Center at JNU. There they saw a variety of materials including photos, books and legacies of overseas Jeju Islanders and learned about why so many Jeju people emigrated abroad to overcome poverty, working diligently and sending money back home.

That afternoon, participants received cooking lessons from an expert, leaning how to cook traditional Jeju cuisine as well as fusion bingtteok and gireumtteok. The students seemed to enjoy this most of all.

The third day included a visit to the Jeju April 3rd Peace Park to pay respects to those who lost their lives in the Jeju Massacre, named after an infamous incident on April 3, 1948. The students were shocked to hear of the sad history and one said “I learned about this tragedy for the first time and I’m very sad. I hope this never happens again. I will remember this terrible nightmare forever, never to forget.”

On the next day, the fourth of the trip, the students climbed Mt. Songaksan. Although it was very hot and they sweated terribly, they all enjoyed the beautiful scenery surrounded by sea, islands and mountains. After their hike, they joined a farewell dinner party at their dormitory before the final day.

The next morning a farewell ceremony was held at 10 a.m. and Lee Kyu-bong, director of Jeju Human Resources Development Center, presented participants with completion certificates and gave a farewell address. Kang Ji-youn, the student representative, also gave a farewell address, saying she had learned a lot about the island through the program and thanked the province and university for their support, adding:

“I will never forget. I will remember this forever. In the future, I will contribute to Jeju Island.”
