Jeju Special Self-Governing Province joined member nations at the 18th ITOP Forum in Angsana Laguna Phuket Resort & Hotel from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 as a joint statement was adopted to promote a sustainable maritime tourism network.

Improved partnerships between member nations in the areas of tourism, arts, culture, education and environment were tabled as was the promotion of more convenient sightseeing networks between urban and rural areas. The forum also pledged to improve safety measures in the event of accidents, hazards and disasters at sea.

Park Jeong-ha, vice-governor of Jeju province, said this in a statement:

“Our tourism policy is facing a dilemma between development and the preservation of our natural and cultural heritage. We cannot totally restrict development projects because the local economy heavily depends on the tourism industry. Instead, we should... come up with ways to exploit our strengths while preventing the negative effects of development and increasing tourist numbers.”

Park continued: “To maintain our ‘clean island’ image, Jeju is actively investing in preservation of the maritime environment. We are preparing legal regulations to prevent irresponsible development along the coast, and also preparing measures to protect damaged coastal areas and prevent coastal erosion.”

The 19th ITOP Forum will be held in Jeju in 2015.
