The Korea Maritime Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) will hold open International Coastal Cleaning Day at Iho Tewoo Beach at 10 a.m., Sept. 25.
This year, various events are being held across Korea under the name of International Coastal Cleaning Day, including Jeju. The day originated in Texas in 1986 when the Ocean Conservation Center teamed up with the private sector to start the iniative. Korea has participated since 2001 and last year 6,984 people joined nationwide to collect 387 tons of garbage.
The ceremony on Thursday is hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. It is organized by KOEM, Jeju Sea Grant, Jeju Sea Environmental Conservation Cooperation, Jeju Sea Love Practicing Cooperation, Korea Zero Waste Movement Network and Dodu and Iho Fishing Village Corperatives (Eocheongae). Suppors are Jeju Ocean Management, Jeju Ocean Police and The Jeju Weekly. |
