Crowds gathered in glorious autumn sunshine for the start of the 2014 Jeju Olle Walking Festival on Thursday as “Olle addicts” from across Asia joined for three days of walking and celebrations.

Also dubbed the Asian Walking Festival 2014, various countries’ flags could be seen flying amongst the crowds. Ahn Eun Joo, general manager of Jeju Olle, said not only were more people coming every year, but the same faces were returning. “They are known as the Olle addicts,” she joked.

Jeju governor Won Hee-ryong also took to the stage to make an address, even having a little treat for international visi-tors — an unscripted English message. “Olle has led to great changes in Jeju tourism,” he said, adding that walkers not only heal their spirits, but can “discover the meaning of life” while walking the trails.

Olle founder Seo Myungsuk, whose happy-go-lucky spirit seemed to infect everyone at the event, told the crowd it had been a year of preparations to ensure everything was harmonized with nature, and she hailed the strong international showing.

“Let’s do it together! Let’s walk together, let’s eat together, let’s sing together, let’s dance together! Let’s enjoy the Olle together!” she impelled.

Some had come to learn from this spirit. Sugeng Marsudiarto, co-director of the Korean Indonesian Foresting Corporative came with fellow Indonesian tourism officials to learn from Jeju’s ecotourism infrastructure with a view to implement programs on the tourist island of Lombok. The group had already visited Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest, Saryeoni Woodland Path and Seonheul Gotjawal.

“Most important is to learn how to increase cooperation between local communities and the government. Jeju has a lot of success in this area,” he said.

There were plenty of other faces from across Asia, with Singapore particularly well represented. One group, proudly flag-waving and singing, had joined the event for the third year in a row. Julie Jam said it was the joyous atmosphere that kept her coming back, and she had “met many great friends.”

Others had flown down from Seoul, such as Kim Ki Sung. He summed up the Olle spirit as he was decked out in flamboyant garb with two friends.

“I enjoy the trails and I come every year. Whenever I walk these trails, my mind is released from worries,” he said.
The festival closed on Saturday, Nov. 8, with events at Gimnyeong Seo-pogu, the end of Olle 19.
