“Jeju Hado-ri Restoration Plan for Migratory Birds” was selected by the Ministry of the Environment on Nov. 14 and 700 million won will be injected as the site becomes a government-sanctioned ecological reserve.
Hado-ri is an estuarine ecosystem with various bird species including the endangered Black-faced Spoonbill and migratory bird species that winter on Jeju. The ecosystem supports numerous bird species as well as amphibians.
Development in the area has encroached on the fragile habitat and the water has been polluted by agricultural runoff.
The restoration plan includes an artificial flora island for wintering migratory birds and improving the marine ecosystem with beneficial microorganisms to increase food sources for the birds and other creatures. There are also trails and bird-watching facilities for visitors and it will become a center for environmental education.
Alongside the Korea Environment Program, the Ministry hosted and sponsored the designation which selected sites for environmentally-friendly and green growth projects. Hado-ri displayed extensive citizen participation in conservation and restoration and holds potential for diffusion nationwide. |
