The 17th Seongsan Ilchul Festival will take place at Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), a Unesco World Natural Heritage Site at the northeastern tip of Jeju Island, from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1. 2010. Events scheduled for Dec. 31 include a Shamanistic ritual, poetry recitations and a stage performance combining Jeju traditional culture with modern elements and fireworks. On New Year’s Day at sunrise - forecast for 7:38 a.m. - tourists and Jeju residents make wishes for the New Year as the festival highlight. Also included in the program are a Seongsam Ilchulbong night hike and tastings of Jeju traditional food. Seongsan Ilchulbong, a volcanic tuff cone surrounded by 99 sharp rocks, is Jeju’s mostvisited attraction each New Year’s Day. |
