The 2015 Nepal earthquake, hitting on April 25 measuring 7.8 or 8.1 quake on the Mercalli intensity scale (often misreported as Richter scale). killed at least 5,000 and left 10,000 injured. The UN says more than 8 million people have been affected and some 70,000 houses have been destroyed.
In March 2015 there were 2018 Nepal-born immigrants living on Jeju Island. Of these 118 were married to Korean nationals, 197 were registered as workers and the rest were students and others. Although investigations are ongoing, 47 have reported damage to property or injury to family members in their home country. Four are unable to contact family members feared injured or dead.
The Jeju International Peace Community (co-representatives: Hong Seong-jik, Ryu Jeong-gil, Kang Sang-cheol) and the Jeju Nepal Community (representative: Subuhadra) are holding a donation drive in solidarity with the victims. Everyone is invited to come and take part.
