The gardens at Seogwipo Agricultural Technology Center became a creative canvas for Jeju performance artists on May 16 as a “Spring Banquet” was held in support of the 2015 Jeju International Citrus Expo to be held in November.

Market stalls ringed the lawn of the center as fresh juices, jams and rice cakes were on sale as well as hand-made arts and crafts.

The performances were further into the grounds, hidden in a shaded grotto.

Experimental artist Kim Baekki was charged by organizers with designing the event and his vision transformed an ornamental garden into a stage for an array of artists in the late-afternoon sun.

Citrus fruits were found dotted everywhere like lanterns, guiding spectators to the stage which was framed by manicured green tea fields to the right, and towering boulders behind.

Wherever possible — and seemingly impossible — artists were perched, armed with violins, cellos, paint brushes, hypnotic rhythms, or just the floating citrus bobbing in the waters below.

“Jeju’s nature is so beautiful that we must attempt the harmonization of nature and humans,” said experimental artist Kim, who is also director of the Korea Experimental Arts Festival held in Jeju since 2013.

Kim personally chose all of the performers for the event with the lineup including percussionist Choi Sori, samulnori group Norianmaro, street artists Salgoce, dancer Lee Sun and violinist Simon Powell, among many others.

UK-born Powell said that he was pleased to collaborate with such talent in the “magical” surroundings.

“Kim Baekki has a superb sense of spectacle and showmanship, coupled with a refined aesthetic sensibility and a desire to constantly innovate. He is breathing fresh life into the Jeju arts scene,” said Powell.

As he greeted performers and spectators on the day, Chung Dal-ho, president of the Organizing Committee, said the event will help to “rally the support of the public” for the November expo.

“It was a success as a lot of people came to watch this cultural performance, which reflects the fact that the public is well aware of the Expo and very much looking forward to its opening in early November.”
