On Thursday, May 28, at Jeju Global Education City, Branksome Hall Asia held an ‘Empty Bowls: Kids Feeding Kids’ fundraising dinner.
Teachers, staff and members of the public bought soup served in handmade bowls — made by Grade 4 to Grade 12 since August 2014 — to help fight hunger in local communities.
Aidan Hammond was one of the teachers in charge of the event and he said it could help bring the community together and make it “a better place for all.”

The proceeds are to be donated to Good Neighbors, a charity providing meals to local school children over weekends and school holidays through local food banks and initiatives.
Active participation is a key part of the IB curriculum at BHA and the visual arts specialist added that the project both increased student awareness of hunger within the local community, and gave them experience as agents of change.
“To that end, we want students to understand that being a part of a movement, being a leader, being a doer, is more meaningful and can have greater impact than just donating money to a worthy cause,” said Hammond.

Hammond has been active in Empty Bowls for over 15 years and he said the act of making the bowls, a form of “social justice-based art,” is important “because it gives meaning to making.”
“It means a lot to me that we can continue this here at BHA, and begin a tradition of supporting our local community through art and action,” he added.
