Ten days after release on July 6, Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins Taesan and Boksoon joined a wild pod in the Jeju seas near Jongdal port, Gujwa-eup on July 15.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Cetacean Research Institute confirmed that the three dolphins released in 2013, Jedol, Chunsam and Sampal were among the 40-strong group which thus included all five of the dolphins rescued from captivity were back together.
The dolphins were captured in 2009 and 2010 and sold to a dolphin show and zoo. The Supreme Court ordered their release in 2013 although due to poor health Taesan and Boksoon had to wait until this year for release.
A Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries spokesperson said: “After seeing Taesan and Boksoon happy and healthy with the other dolphins, our worries lifted that they might not be able to adjust to the wild.”
The Cetacean Research Institute will continue intensive monitoring of the animals until this weekend.
