The restricted access to Doneori Oreum which began in 2008 is likely to be extended, provincial officials have stated.
The “rest years” were first instigated seven years ago to allow vegetation on the oreum, or volcanic cone, to recover from erosion.
Despite being slated for reopening next year, researchers found that due to the slow recovery of the fragile habitat, the restrictions will be extended for another year.
With the extension of the “rest year,” the volcanic cone will be off limits again until next year when a reevaluation will take place.
