Back in 2012, Jeju Province established the Carbon-Free Island 2030 Project to provide electricity using strictly new and renewable energy sources and to replace all automobiles with electric vehicles by 2030.
It got the president’s mark of approval on Nov 30 after Park Geun-hye said that the national government will support the carbon-free island plans in her keynote speech at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris, also known as COP21.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy had already announced on Nov 24 Strategies to Promote New Energy Industries by 2030 in response to the New Climate System which included measures to replace all automobiles with electric vehicles in Jeju.
The national and presidential support is a major boost for the project with budget and regulatory improvements expected in the near future.
