UN Secretary-General supports carbon-free island bid
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (반기문) has pledged institutional support for Jeju’s New Energy Business Platform.
Jeju Governor Won Heeryong (원희룡) met with Ban in Paris on Sunday and introduced the provincial carbon-free project. By 2030 all Jeju electricity will be powered by new and renewables.
The UN head praised the provincial effort to create a global eco-platform, and stated that he will make a concerted effort to encourage other UN member states to follow suit.
Ban also supported Jeju’s efforts to launch a pilot project to assist North Korea with energy supply using new and renewables. The UN head said he hopes that Jeju will take the lead role in tackling the issue in the future.
