Big stories for 2016

2016 Culture City of East Asia
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected Jeju as Korea’s representative 2016 Culture City of East Asia.

Jeju will host a series of culture and arts events to promote mutual understanding between Korea, Japan and China alongside China’s Ningbo and Japan’s Nara cities.

The Culture City of East Asia program dates back to 2011 and the cities will hold joint cultural events throughout the year.

Jeju was chosen for its active art and culture community as well as its rich heritage.

Second airport construction
This is a story that is not going to go away as negotiations and protestations continue over the new airport in Seongsan-eup.

As provincial authorities propose a commercial zone, “AirCity,” key questions remain around suspected foreknowledge and land acquisition in the surrounding area.

Stalled Berjaya/JDC project in Yerae-ri
In what is seen as a symbolic case for Jeju development, Berjaya has pledged to take Jeju Free International City Development Corporation to court after its luxury resort development was ruled unlawful.

Jeju province is also pushing ahead with the National Assembly to rewrite the Jeju Special Law to take control of the project.

The Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2016
Although the venue has changed — the ICC JEJU assumes the privilege over Haevichi Hotel & Resort — the perennial question remains: will the president come?

From May 25 to 27 the theme will be Asia's New Order and Cooperative Leadership so expect plenty of sessions looking at East Asian relations in the year Jeju is a Culture City of East Asia.

The 20th National Assembly Election (April 13th)
On April 13 next year, Jeju people will go to the polls in a nationwide general election to choose who represents them in the 20th National Assembly.

It is possible the number of seats could increase. up from the current 300-seat unicameral legislature to 303 seats.

Park Geun-hye is safe for now as the presidential elections will be held in December 2017.

Gangjeong Military-Civilian Complex Port
With the creation of the 9th Brigade Jeju battalion and the construction 96 percent complete, the naval base is expected to see its first ships in port early next year.
