Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been been enjoying a taste of Jeju as part of filming for his new television series.
During a whirlwind trip, the British TV star has been singing the praises of Jeju people, whom he described as some of "best, coolest and loveliest people in the world."
Despite battling jet-lag, Jamie has been visiting the island's market stalls, sampling fresh produce and even met a 117-year-old Jeju grannie.
His energetic itinerary also involved diving with haenyeo - traditional Jeju women divers - with Jamie posting pictures and messages of his experiences on social network sites.
On Thursday (May 28) he posted: "Today I Had the pleasure to spend time with a 117-year-old Korean woman !! Simply Amazing.....such a sweet lady, she still walks well, she's flexible and cooks for her self 3 times a day !! wow."
Jamie is in Jeju for filming of his new television series on world superfood which champions the health benefits of foods such as kimchi.
One of his first visits to the island was to a five-day market where he photographed "some amazing stuff" including kimchi, dried fish and noodles.
He's also been to one of the famed Gotjawal forests where he picked shiitake mushrooms with the help of a local guide.
On Thursday (May 28), Jamie produced a live video stream from Dongmon Fish Market in Jeju-Si as fans followed in tow.
He said: "I'm here because I'm on Jeju island - famous for long life, healthy life. I met a 117-year-old woman yesterday - it blew my mind.
"When you travel and meet people through food you just meet the best, coolest and loveliest people."
Later the same day he donned a wetsuit and diving gear, braving strong currents with a group of haenyeo, whom he described as "inspiring".
He wrote: "Such top lady's. There are 4500 of these lady's ( mermaids of the sea some call them ) on the island of Jeju providing the most lagit source of amazing shellfish and seaweed to the people.
"My fixer here reckons the average age is about 72 years old !!! Amazing ...honestly were they work the sea was bumpy today the currents were strong but the rocks are super sharp as its volcanic and can also be slippery and once they have harvested all there shellfish they have to carry 15 / 20 kgs of there catch back to there camp not so normal for people of that age but very inspiring to witness ... I've really enjoyed this trip." |
