News Brief

The Korean government said on Dec.26 that it would consider financial support for Jeju’s plan to resume sending tangerines to North Korea. From 2001 to 2007, Jeju’s tangerine assistance for North Korea was supported by the government and local authorities and residents, contributing to improving inter-Korean relations. Last year the program failed to get support in the aftermath of the stalled inter-Korean talks after North Korea’s carried out a second nuclear test. Jeju asked the Ministry of Unification on Dec. 14 for 3 billion won to send 20,000 tons of local tangerines to North Korea as part of humanitarian efforts.
