On May 1st at the Kal hotel in Jeju city, The Jeju Weekly celebrated its first anniversary in grand style. Two weeks leading up to what was inadvertently a rather formal event, an open invitation on the Jeju Weekly website, as well as mailed invites, enticed more than 200 people to the party, which pleasantly exceeded expectations. The audience was comprised of Jeju Weekly staff, readers, dignitaries, politicians and leading opinion makers on the island.
After much mingling, introductions and congratulatory conversations among the attendees, the master of ceremonies, Jean K. Min, project manager for Jeju MICE newspaper, officially began the festivities with a video outlining the purpose of the Jeju Weekly and its reception. Governor Kim Tae Hwan, JDC’s director general Byun Jong Il, UN’s former secretary general Maurice Strong, Marsha Bogolin from the Art of Life and Fred Dustin, owner of the Kimnyoung Maze Park, all gave recorded speeches about their reactions to the paper and messages of congratulations.

Among the many prestigious speakers were vice governor Yang Jo Hoon, Olle founder Suh Myung Sook, who, a former editor-in-chief of OhmyNews, joked about how one should never trust an editor, and of course, the publisher of Jeju Weekly, Song Jung Hee who thanked everyone in the room for their support and said, “I am sure our newspaper serves the goals [of the community] to some extent and will play a bigger role in the future. But more simply, before starting this newspaper, all the tourism brochures and translated documents on Jeju Island lacked inspiring lively stories. I just wanted to give some touching, more lively, more genuine stories about this unique island with fresh eyes from the perspective of foreigners.”
It was a joyous occasion, almost a reunion of sorts with many attendees the focus of previous Jeju Weekly stories, which afforded the opportunity to catch up with Boris de Mesones of Modern Times, Ambassador Chung Dalho of UNITAR and others.

It was a catered affair and as food was dished onto plates from the buffet and soju and beer were consumed the party became more boisterous and allotted the time for those close to the paper to not only look back at what has already been accomplished, but more importantly to look forward towards what lies ahead and greater ways of servicing our community on Jeju island.
Song plans to be there every step of the way.
