From July 29 to Aug. 23, the legendary opera “Turandot” will be performed on Jeju Island. AP Entertainment will present the three-act opera by Giacomo Puccini at Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo.
In May 2003, the same opera was successfully staged at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and attracted more than 100,000 audience members. According to a recent survey by Mega Box of theater-goers, “Turandot” ranked in the top five favorite operas. “Turandot” is known for its extraordinary Chinese stage set, which is 220 meters wide and 45 meters high. The large-scale wall of the Forbidden City is more than enough to make audiences gape when it opens.
The production team will also use 3D special effects on the stage backdrop for the first time in Asia. Director Hong Seung Kim said, “Based on my experience with more than 150 operas, I will try to revive the dramatic and lavish melody of the original ‘Turandot.’”
AP Entertainment hopes to bring large-scale operas to Jeju every year from now.
Editor’s Note: After going to press, The Jeju Weekly was informed that “Turandot” has been indefinitely postponed.
