A severe weather warning was issued on the morning of Aug. 10 as typhoon Dainmu — meaning goddess of lightning and thunder in Chinese — touched down at about 6 a.m., to the west of Seogwipo.
Heavy wind and rain prompted the Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration to ask residents to be extra cautious while traveling. Warning messages broadcast from truck-mounted loudspeakers were heard in the streets of Jeju City and Seogwipo.
The Maritime Police and Coast Guard also closed ports in light of 4 to 7 meter waves.
While no casualties were reported, damage include collapsed cranes and 100 meters of a rock armor wall being washed away.
Flights and cruise ship schedules were also disrupted.
This is the first typhoon to hit Jeju Island in the last few years.
