Jeju hopes to become an “international city.” It may have a long way yet to go before achieving this status, and the debate rages on as to whether the goal is a worthy one and what impact it will have on Jeju society.

Nevertheless: one more leap toward diversity, in the form of Jeju's first French Film Festival, will take place next week.

This festival will be held on April 25-27 at the Film Art Center in Gu-Jeju near Tapdong Rotary (756-5757).

Festival schedule is as follows:

April 25: 7 p.m. – “Tanguy” [2001]; 9 p.m. – Lecture, “The Story of French Movies,” by M. Daniel Kapelian of the French Embassy in Seoul.

April 26: 2 p.m. – “Les Choristes” [2004]; 4 p.m. – “400 Coups” [1959]; 7 p.m. – “Trop Belle Pour Toi” [1989].

April 27: 2 p.m. – “Le Château de ma Mére” [1990]; 4 p.m. – “Au Revoir les Enfants” [1987]; 7 p.m. – “8 Femmes” [2002].

The films are in French with Korean subtitles. The lecture will be provided in French with Korean translation.

Primary organizer for the festival is PAN Cultural Events Agency. Dr. Ko Young-lim, scholar of French language and literature, is the agency's director and coordinator of the festival.

The festival has two aims, according to Dr. Ko: (1) to contribute to Jeju residents' awareness of other cultures in order to encourage more open attitudes toward diversity; and, (2) to contribute to the revitalization of Gu-Jeju as a cultural destination.

Supporters of the festival include the French Embassy and the Institut Francais.
