The 4th International Intangible Heritage Film Festival in Korea announced on Aug. 21 that the award for this year’s best film went to ‘Daemulim.’ (´ë¹°¸²)
As the title ‘Daemulim’ (which means passing down to the next generation) indicates, this film follows Kim Ok-ja, an elderly Haeneyo, and Kang Eun-ah, her granddaughter, as the granddaughter tries to follow in her grandmothers footsteps and become a haenyeo.
This short film is less than four minutes long and was produced this year by Lee Han-young from the Jeju Haenyeo Culture Preservation Organization, a non-profit organization that aims to promote and preserve Haenyeo culture.
The award ceremony took place on Aug. 31 and the film was shown at the opening event of the 4th International Intangible Heritage Film Festival which is organized by the National Intangible Heritage Center.
Film producer Lee Han-you said “Being a haenyeo is a profession. Nowadays, haenyeo seem to be regarded as cultural contents. Through this film I wanted to show that if haeneyo as a profession cannot be sustainable, then haenyeo culture does not exist or just exists at the museum.”
