Lunar New Year is here again as millions of people travel home to celebrate the biggest holiday in Korea with their families. Millions more will be hitting the shops and welcome research shows that savvy shoppers can make big savings at Korea’s traditional markets.

One of the foremost concerns for Korean families is preparing an ample spread for the ceremonial table and research released by the Agency for Traditional Market Administration, suggests that households shopping at traditional markets for their Seollal fare will pay 15 percent less than shoppers at Emart or Lotte Mart.

Researchers sampled 27 items - reflecting a typical Seollal spread - at 36 traditional markets and 36 big marts across the country. The average cost at the traditional markets was 220,680 won, while prices at the chain outlets crept up to 258,484 won.

All except flour of the 27 selected items were found to be cheaper at traditional markets, including: beef, pork, bracken, spinach, radish, spring onion, apple, peach, persimmon, tofu, rice cake, (traditional sweet) yakgwa, and egg. Vegetables were as much as 22 percent cheaper, seafood 16.5 percent, raw meat 16 percent, yakgwa 12.2 percent, and fruit 10.7 percent.

When prices are rising across the board, it is timely news that traditional markets beat the big marts hands down as shoppers prepare their New Year table.
