- Donations will go to flood-stricken areas in Southwest Asia and support centers for multicultural families, as they have done for five years.
- The route follows the most beautiful coastal route along the Gimnyeong and Jongdal coast
A unique marathon will be held on Sept. 29 on Jeju’s east coast at Gimnyeong. Half of the registration fee will be automatically donated to charitable causes and over 100 million won has been donated since 2008.
Through Beautiful Store, Korea’s representative social enterprise, donations will be provided to Southwest Asian community projects in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Ganges River Plain in India, areas susceptible to flooding.
Not only will the donations be used for digging wells and anti-illiteracy projects in these areas, but they will also fund support centers for multicultural families in Jeju, such as at Jeju Migrant Peace Community and Jeju Beautiful Youth Center.
The beautiful course includes the Gimnyeong and Jongdal coastal road offering great views of Jeju’s landscape. Beauty spots passed en route include Gimnyeong Beach, Woljeong Beach, Hado Beach and the home of crinum lilies.
A number of events by Indie bands and Jeju art and cultural organizations will be prepared and Gujwa Leisure Sports Park, the starting and finishing point, will hold giveaway events for all attendees.
The marathon starts at 9 a.m. on Sept. 29 at Gujwa Leisure Sports Park. There will be a full course, half course (over 18 years of age), 10 km course (over 8 years of age) and 5 km course (open for everybody).
There will be prizes for first, second and third in each race, including trophies and prizes between 100,000 to 500,000 won. Online news site Jeju Sori is the organizer and the Jeju National Athletic Track and Field Association also supports the marathon.
The entry fee is 30,000 won for the half and full courses and 20,000 won for 5 k.m. and 10 k.m. Applications are accepted until Sept. 7 at http://marathon.jejusori.net
