The International Convention Center (ICC) Jeju, in Seogwipo City is expected to finish being renovated into an eco-friendly building by the end of this month, just in time to host the World Conservation Congress on Sept. 6 to 15. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the ICC announced on Aug. 13 that the 12.6 billion won (US$11 million) investment to renovate the ICC is expected to save 717,000 kilowatts per year as well as at least 70 million won in electricity costs.
The building is also expect to save at least 30 million won a year through applying 10,741m2 of insulator film to the outside of the ICC’s windows. This is expected to prevent harmful ultraviolet rays from entering the building as well as heat loss. This will save an estimated 30 million won per year.
The renovation included replacing the building’s air conditioners, heaters, elevators, and escalators with energy saving versions that will lower energy consumption by 30 percent. The ICC will construct a 728m2 roof garden on the sixth floor and will also adopted a building energy management system.
Annually, the ICC uses 340 kilowatts per hour for cooling and heating and 100,000 liters of oil a year to turn on the lights. The total energy costs amounts to between 450 million won ($400,000) to 500 million won ($442,000). However, through this remodeling, the ICC is expected to save between 150 million and 160 million won a year.
