The Jeju Police Forensic Services Department (JPFSD) was recognized with an award for excellence during the 25th Korean Society of Forensic Science (KSFS) Symposium held at the Natioal Forensic Service(NFS) center on June 1. The annual symposium was attended this year by 23 teams nationwide, bringing the best and brightest in Korea’s forensic services together. These research findings were presented on display boards during the presentation session.

In total, three teams including the JPFSD and two from the National Forensic Service were awarded prizes. Kim Sang Hyeon, who oversees KSFS, told The Weekly in a telephone interview that the winning teams were chosen by the members of KSFS based on the rigorousness of the research.

The two other winning presentations were entitled “Washed Soccer Shoes, Detection of Blood and DNA Fingerprinting” and “A Case Study of the Overturned Crane,” he said.

JPFSD Sergeant Seo Jong Han was the lead author of the paper, which was co-written with Sergeant Kim Byung Soo and Coroner Park Jo Yeon. They researched the peculiar acts of an arsonist who burned his own house using paint thinner, in a murder-suicide involving his own mother. The case took place in June, 2010 in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City.

The JPFSD performed a crime-scene investigation and an autopsy to determine the circumstances of the crimes, and found that though much evidence was destroyed by fire, they were able to piece together the chain of events, finding that the crime had been carefully planned.

In a related story, the Jeju Police Agency is planning to strengthen its own forensic investigation team by joining forces with a local DNA Identification Center, which is set to open this July.
