For a long time, life in Jeju island was very hard. To the people of Jeju, every day was so weary and painful. They always had to starve. This situation forced the mothers of the Jeju to go out into the sea. They had to be much stronger so they could earn enough food to feed their children. They dived into the sea with no proper equipment. The only thing that made them endure was just a mothership and the responsiblity to their families. So They called as a “mother of the sea” in Jeju dialect.

On November 16th, the JDC Junior Jounorlist members visited Jeju Aqua Planet. The Jeju Aqua Planet is the largest aquarium in Asia. Numerous people visit every year. Visitors enjoy performances by Jeju Haenyeo who dive into a large water tank and demonstrate their traditional method of work. A basketball is lowered into the tank, that is easily squashed by the water pressure, to show the effects of the pressure on a haenyeo’s body.

Wanda Wynn, a forigner who graduated from the Haenyeo school, was very interested in the Haenyeo. Wynn said, “Before I came to Korea, I grew up in a small town in Southern America. A large part of my childhood was spent in very small fishing village called ‘Mayport’. So, when I began researching Jeju, the first thing that I read about was the haenyeo. I automaticly wanted to learn more about Haenyeo. Later, I found that there was a haenyeo school. I thought ‘I gotta go,’” She was very pleased with going to haenyeo school. She also said, “It was a 4 month commitment, every Saturday for sixteen weeks. Many different speakers came to the school. We learned about the history and culture of the haenyeo.” She found the experience very interesting.

Haenyeos are more than just excellent divers. Each woman is a devoted mother to her family. Haenyeo are going to dissapear in Korea. The haenyeos are becoming recognized around the world and soon, the world will know they are The world will know that they are strong and great ‘mothers of the sea.’
