This year it will cost more for families to set the memorial table at Lunar New Year, or Seollal, after price hikes nationwide, particularly for beef.

Making sure the family and ancestors are completely satisfied will cost about 5 percent more this Lunar New Year, or Seollal, compared to 2015, states the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation.

Families that shop at stores, or marts, will pay around 329,000 won, which is 5.3 percent more than last year.

Savvy shoppers are advised to head to traditional markets, however, as not only can families fill the table for around 232,000 won, but the price increase on 2015 is put at the lower 4.9 percent.

Jeju’s memorial table differs slightly from the mainland, including delicacies such as barley bread, mandarin and even shark.

To ensure that the required foods are in stock city-wide, inspections are being carried out until Feb 7.

City officials are visiting traditional markets and large wholesale stores to monitor stock and quality levels of agricultural, livestock, and fisheries produce commonly used for the ancestral rituals.

The officials are also checking the accuracy of labeling around the place of origin of products.

The city hopes that the checks will help ensure prices remain stable in the lead up to the holiday and any sellers caught violating regulations will be issued with on-the-spot punishments.
