Grace, beauty, and talent marked the 2012 World in Jeju Colorful Choom Festival held on Saturday, April 14 at the Jeju Culture and Art Center in Jeju City. Although you might not be able to tell from its name, the festival was a celebration of belly dancing from around the world, with some Flamenco thrown in for good measure.

The festival was created and sponsored by Jeju’s own belly dance master, Yun Sun Ah known in the world of belly dance as Sophia. She is the founder and president of Hera’s Belly Company on Jeju and is recognized internationally as a master belly dance teacher, performer, choreographer, and director. Teaching on Jeju since 2004, Sophia’s goal has been to bring belly dance to Jeju in a big way. This festival was her first major effort on the road to realizing her vision.

The festival was divided into a morning belly dance competition and an evening belly dance and flamenco performance.

The morning competition involved dancers ranging from four to 40 years of age. Over 70 amateur dancers from around Korea came to Jeju to compete and perform for the judges and the appreciative audience. Prizes were awarded in several categories.

The evening performance, in front of approximately 200 guests, began with a stirring rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I will Always Love You” by the beautiful singer and dancer BaoBao Lin from China. This was followed by colorful and exciting performances featuring some of the best professional dancers from around Asia.

In addition to amazing performances by Sophia, the crowd was treated to individual and group performances by Korean Diva in Bellyship featuring Kim Hyun Jin, Kim Hye Jung, Bak Jee Min, Suh Eun Hee, Ha Eun Jung, and Hwang Hye Yeong who are all master belly dancers and/or former world champions.

The audience was also treated to energetic Flamenco performances featuring renowned dancer Choe Jae Wun among others. Arabic drummer Jung Sang Jin was also on hand to lend authentic accompaniment to the dance performances.

Overall, the 2012 World in Jeju Colorful Choom Festival provided a wonderful evening celebrating the beautiful art of belly dance.
