The 13th Bomok Jaridom (damselfish) Festival begins June 15 at Bomok village port in Seogwipo City.

The small village, known for producing damselfish, has hosted this festival every summer since 2000 and is popular with visitors who want to sample Jeju traditional food made from Bomok’s staple seafood.

The first of this three-day festival will begin with a street parade, and percussion and dance performances, followed by flying balloons to wish for Jeju’s success in hosting the World Conservation Congress this coming September, and lighting the lamp in the old lighthouse. Also scheduled for that day is a special ritual that is performed to ensure a bountiful harvest.

On the second and third days of the festival there will be several musical performances as well as a concert by singer Yang Seung Woo. Jeju traditional music will be offered as well as dance contests and a singing contest for both citizens and tourists.

Organizers have also prepared activities for the whole family, including trying to catch damselfish with either one’s bare hands (free of charge) or fishing from the seashore (3,000 won), and making models of traditional Jeju boats called "taewoo" (20,000 won). Other experiences like yacht sailing and SCUBA diving will also be offered, but require a reservation to be made in advance and costs 20,000 won and 30,000 won, respectively.

Booths will be set up for visitors to try the fish, and there will also be other restaurants serving local cuisine as well as a market selling local specialties.
