The shaman Jung Gong Chul died on June 9 after a year-long battle with throat cancer. Jung, 54, a graduate of Jeju National University, was well recognized as a keeper of tradition, professional actor, political and peace activist, and a tireless supporter of cultural preservation. He was originally a member of Chilmeoridang Yeongdeung-gut Preservation Society of Jeju City under the mentorship of Grand Shaman Kim Yoon Su, and more recently aligned with the Keun-gut Preservation Society of Gutjwa-eup, under the guidance of Shaman Suh Sun Sil. With the death of Jung, another light has gone out on Jeju's traditional culture.
