In a speech to the 324th general session of the provincial assembly on Tuesday, Governor Won Hee-ryong pledged to work toward Jeju’s designation as a special electric vehicle (EV) zone. The pledge is in line with his vision for 2015 and the island's carbon-free 2030 bid.

Won said he has used an EV as his official transportation since taking office and will work with global suppliers to increase the installation of charging stations across the island and support business start-ups focused on battery development. There are also plans to build an island-wide EV data management center and attract private investment for EV inspection stations and inspection systems.

The governor had already announced that the province will distribute 9,500 electric vehicles to locals by 2019 in an effort to make Jeju a carbon-free island by 2030. Over 211 billion won will be invested in subsidies for the 9,500 electric vehicles over the next five years.

Jeju Province will first distribute 1,500 units next year, providing subsidies worth 2.3 million won per unit, and additional grants of up to 7 million won for charging facilities. By 2030, it hopes to have replaced all 370,000 regular cars with EVs.

The province has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Finance Corporation for the extended distribution of electric vehicles and charging facilities, as well as renewable energy.

Under the MOU, the Korea Finance Corporation will be in charge of financial support while Jeju Province will take care of administrative support.
