3rd Line Butterfly performed a special concert at Elliot’s Chair, in Gunam-dong, Jeju City on Friday, July 12. The cult Korean indie band was in Jeju to play at the Stepping Stone Festival, Hamdeok, July 13.
3rd Line Butterfly was formed in 1999 and is described by http://www.beyondkpop.comas having an “ alternative, noisy-psychedelic, dream-pop, modern rock musical style.” Their latest album, Dream Talk, was selected by the Hankyoreh newspaper as the album of the year for 2012.
Nahm Sang-ah’s haunting vocals captivated the small, but enthusiastic crowd of around 40. She was joined by Sung Kiwan on guitar and vocals, Kim Nam-yoon on a laptop and Seo Hyun-jung on drums.
Sung, on lead guitar, said that the venue provided a different atmosphere to other gigs.
“The atmosphere was very close. It was like a storytelling. I felt really good.”
Sung was also pleased to be down on Jeju to perform at the Stepping Stone Festival the next day.
“I’m looking forward to it. I really like the Stepping Stone Festival. The organizers, the musicians and the crowd are all together as one. Today was very quiet, but tomorrow is going to be very loud,” he joked.
Elliot’s Chair is a small and cosy venue that has built a strong reputation for its weekend gigs. Enter from the back and it is a ground-floor level cafe, while from the street visitors must climb up to the first floor via a side alley. It gives the coffee shop a hidden feel.
One audience member, Min Gyeong, was impressed with both the venue and band.
"It's a small venue, but it gave the gig a really close atmosphere and at times it almost felt like a private show with the band. They seemed to like that, too," she said.
Next up at Elliot’s Chair is singer-songwriter Kim Geo-ji on Saturday, July 20.
