Dongji Red Bean Porridge Festival
2-4:30pm, Sunday Dec 21 and Monday Dec 22
Mountain Village Woodcraft Shop, Jeju Folk Village
Jeju Folk Village is holding a “Dongji Red Bean Porridge Festival” for winter solstice and all visitors to Jeju Folk Village are invited to share “patjuk” (red bean porridge) made in a large wood-fired cauldron in a “jungji,” (kitchen) the kitchen of a traditional Jeju house.
Dongji is one of 24 seasonal divisions and the time at which the day is shortest and night is longest. This means yin is at its extremes, but as the day lengthens yang also waxes.
People of old called this the “Little New Year” for this reason and there is an expression that we grow a year older after eating dongji patjuk.
This event reconnects people with these traditions and allows people to learn about the meaning of the seasons.
