Jeju has been voted as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.

From a field of 440 original candidates in 220 countries, the seven provisional winners were announced at 7:07 p.m. GMT on Nov. 11 at the New7Wonders Foundation office in Zurich, Switzerland (4:07 a.m. KST Nov. 12).

In alphabetical order, the seven are: Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo, Puerto Princesa Underground River, Table Mountain.

According to a press release, the results are "based on the first count of votes completed since voting ended at 11:11 GMT this morning." They will be checked and independently verified.

Bernard Weber, the New7Wonders founder, thanked "citizens, voluntary organisations, public bodies and governments" which worked to promote the campaign.

“We congratulate each of these participants on achieving their provisional New7Wonders of Nature status, and look forward to completing the confirmation process to celebrate each one in their own Official Inauguration ceremony early in 2012,” Weber said. “When the New7Wonders of Nature are confirmed they will join the man-made New 7 Wonders of the World in becoming part of Global Memory for humankind for ever.”

By morning all around the island, banners congratulating Jeju's win were already hanging at major intersections and in public areas.
