The 2013 Murasaki Quicksilver Jeju Open Surfing Contest was held June 21-23 at Jungmun Beach, Seogwipo City by Jeju Surf Club. The event brought together competitors from a number of countries.

The Men’s Special was won by Yu Gyeong-ho while Takahashi Kento walked away with the Pro-AMA title. The Men’s Open went to Grant Storey and the Women’s Open to Lee Nara. Kim Min-seung won the Men’s Longboard while Shin Su-hyeon won the Women’s Longboard. A host of other titles were up for grabs as well as events over the three days.

Jungmun Beach was packed with spectators and competitors as the weather held out to provide some high-quality surfing. While the waves were not quite Hawaii, there was enough surf to allow the competitors to display their skills to the judges.

Surfing wasn’t the only draw of the weekend as Saturday night saw a party on the beach with DJ Miryo providing the tunes for the revellers. It contributed to a relaxed atmosphere on the beach and the clouds even gave way for some final rays of sunshine around dusk. There were also tents set up providing food and refreshments, which added to the party atmosphere.

Jeju Weekly photographer, Douglas MacDonald, was down there to get some shots. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had this to say about getting the shots.

"I took off my shoes and waded into the ocean, my ears filled with the roar of huge waves crashing violently into the surf around me. I set up my tripod in the swirling water several meters offshore, trying hard to keep my balance as the sand slipped away beneath my feet and the relentless current tugged at my legs. Just then a surfer in a red shirt popped up from behind an enormous wall of water. In a brief but magical moment he burst through a curtain of frothy white sea spray and glided gracefully over the top of the wave as it crested and fell before disappearing behind another rolling swell."
